Britain’s US Ambassador quits over memo spat

Kim Darroch, the UK Ambassador to the US resigns over the diplomatic spat on the leaked memo.

Kim Darroch a well-known figure in Washington resigned over the uproar on the candid cables leaked to a British Sunday Newspaper. The leaked memos infuriated Donald Trump and he launched a twitter attack on Darroch as well as the Britain Prime Minister Theresa May who gave him her full support.

Memos from Kim Darroch in which he called Mr.Trump inept were leaked. "We don't believe this Administration is going to become more normal, less dysfunctional, less unpredictable, less faction-riven, less diplomatically clumsy and inept.” Darroch wrote in a cable.

Darroch also called the administration’s policy toward Iran “incoherent” said the President might be indebted to “dodgy Russians” and raised doubts about whether the White House “will ever look competent.”

These leaked tweets lead to the spat.“The wacky Ambassador that the UK foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy.”Trump tweeted calling Darroch as a “pompous fool” and Theresa May as “foolish”.

"Since the leak of official documents from this embassy, there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding my position and the duration of my remaining term as Ambassador," Darroch wrote in his resignation letter. He added "I want to put an end to the speculation. The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like.”

An inquiry is started to find out who leaked the memos and why.

Ms. May said to parliament that Ministers are backing Mr. Darroch. Mr. Darroch had been due to step down this year. Ms. May herself is on due to step down as Prime Minister by the end of July.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, one of the contenders for next Prime Ministers said: "Allies need to treat each other with respect." She also supported Darroch for keeping his job.

Boris Johnson, the other contender for Prime Minster refused to back Darroch in a televised leadership debate.
