Cat Bi International Airport Grows to Accommodate More

The Cat Bi International Airport in Hai Phong City, Vietnam, wore a joyous and festive look on the newly expanded airport was host to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner which landed there recently.

The new airport conducted a simple yet impressive inauguration ceremony on the same day to celebrate the upgrade for many new international services. The Cat Bi International Airport has many new flights being scheduled for national as well as international departures and arrivals.

The Government’s plan of action

The Vietnamese Government began working on this upgrade project in 2013 and spent over VND 3.6 trillion (USD 161.4 million) and the result is a spanking new airport that is now capable of handling large aircrafts like Boeing 747 and Boeing 777. Due to this massive upgrade, the airport can now receive more than 4 million national and international passengers annually.

This is a huge change from last year’s numbers when it handled about 1.3 million passengers in the entire year. With an average of 35 flights per day, the old airport managed to transport 6300 tons of goods last year. This move is also expected to soak up some of the pressure of Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, which is about 105 kilometers away from Cat Bi.

Launch Pad and Routes

The Cat Bi International Airport will also launch brand new domestic routes to Hai Phong, Phu Quoc and Da Lat with connecting flights to Can Tho and Nghe An. On the international route, direct flights to China, Japan, Thailand and South Korea are expected to open up many doors for the tourism sector. It also brings a much-needed boost to tourism for Hai Phong, which is famous for Cat Ba Islands and the famous Do Son beach, both of which are about 75 kilometres away from Ha Long Bay.

To augment this move, Vietnam’s national carrier Vietjet also announced three new routes from Hai Phong to Da Lat, Buon Ma Thout and Phu Quoc as it looks to address the needs of the large number of tourists expected due to this upgrade. Business travellers and local tourists will also benefit from these new routes from Vietjet, which is the nation’s largest carrier to the port city. It will now operate about 30 flights in a single day, thus occupying 70% of the new airport’s total capacity.

Expectation and Outcome

It is also expected that Vietjet will further augment its current flight schedule and increase the frequency of flights in the near future. Places like Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Pleiku are also expected to be a part of their plan to extend themselves.

Tourism is expected to get a single-handed boost due to the upgrade of the Cat Bi International Airport. Tourists will now find it easy to reach the country and also connect to the nearby tourist attractions without a fuss.

With the influx of tourists from all over the world, the Vietnamese economy will benefit a lot and will definitely bring back better days by opening up business avenues for the locals.
